Why watch it?
- The actors have standard British accents.
- This series is semi-improvised. This means that the actors have freedom to expand on ideas and add or take away things from the dialogue.
- This improvisation is great because it means that the speech is very natural and as close as possible to real life speech in a typical family setting.
- The speech is challenging. We would recommend this series for higher levels of English.
Outnumbered is a British sitcom centred on the Brockmans, a middle-class family living in West London. The family consists of two parents and their three children. The series reflects the realities of family life, concentrating on everyday difficulties and mistakes when trying to raise children. The writers use semi-improvisational scripting, this means that the actors have to follow a general idea or conversation, but they are allowed to improvise or invent what they like in the moment of filming. This gives the programme, and especially the children’s roles, a unique natural feel.
